World Information Society Day
17 May, 2006, world commemorated the Information Society Day, which is dedicated to the popularization of Internet and information communication technologies (ICT) in whole. The holiday was proclaimed in March this year by the Resolution of UNO General Assembly.
Previously, the 17th, May, was celebrated as the International Telecommunication Day, associated with inception of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 1865. ITU has been promoting communication development in the world since telegraphy time and it also initiated World Summit on Information Society. In November, 2005, in Tunis, the second stage of the Summit was held, where the Tunisian Program on Information Society Development was adopted. The Tunisian Program is aimed at raising of info distribution about ICT possibilities, and at surmounting the “digital inequality” in the world.
The November Summit also called upon the United Nations to declare 17 May as the World Information Society Day. In connection with the declaration the Day, the UNO Secretary General Kofi A. Annan emphasized the importance to raise the trust of users in ICT and to develop the cybersecurity culture at the international level.

With a little delay following the Presidential Decree about “About the Priority Tasks as for the Up-to-Date Information Technologies Implementation” in October last year, on 16, March, the Supreme Counsel did pass the law “About confirmation of the fundamentals for IT society development in Ukraine in 2006 – 2015”.
