Jackson-Vanik Amendment Is Abolished for Ukraine
On 23, March the President of the United States George W. Bush signed a bill, which abolishes a Jackson-Vanik Amendment for Ukraine. The significant event means the nondiscriminatory treatment to the products from Ukraine.
As far back as in 1974 Senators Henry Jackson and Charles Vanik initiated amendment, which imposed the trade restriction by the US on the USSR. The amendment was adopted and is still valid more than 30 years for the majority of countries of the former Soviet Union.
According to the US President, this event is the beginning of the new era in relationship history between the two countries. Ukraine’s graduation form the Jackson-Vanik Amendment was earned, in his opinion, by succession of steps which include open emigration, creation of conditions for religious minorities to pursuer beliefs freely, etc.
Besides, in March, the US and Ukraine signed a bilateral agreement that will establish the terms of trade between the two nations when our country joins the WTO, noting that US supports Ukraine in entering the Organization.
